Tuition is probably the biggest expense international students face when considering the US as a destination for college studies. It is difficult to find colleges with cheap tuition for international students in the US. Tuition at most decent colleges in the US is upwards of $20,000 per year. Add to that cost of books and living expenses and you end up looking at a staggering amount in excess of $30,000. This cost can be significantly reduced if college tuition were below $10,000. This would make an US education affordable to many international students that would otherwise never have a chance to study in the US. I have compiled a list of 10 colleges whose tuition for international students in less than $10,000 per year. This list is primarily for undergraduate students and includes tuition fees for two semesters taking 12 credits or more. A number of these colleges are in Minnesota. This is because most state universities in Minnesota allow international students to pay the same tuition rate as resident students. The list is not arranged in any particular order.

We all know how competitive it can get for an international student to get a scholarship at an American university. Not all universities offer scholarships to international students and those that do only have a limited number of scholarships. The competition for these scholarships can be fierce. Typically there are thousands of students from all over the world competing for each scholarship. Many of these students have perfect SAT scores, excellent high school GPA and involvement in extracurricular activities. The average international students’ application for scholarship often gets lost amongst the applications of these overachieving international students.

This does not mean that the average international student has no chance for a scholarship at an US university. There are many universities and colleges in the United States that offer international students scholarships as long as they have decent academic performance in high school.

In-state Tuition
At most state universities, out of state students and international students
are assessed a higher tuition rate than students that live in that state. Often, this tuition is almost twice that of what local students pay. Many universities will offer their international students an opportunity to pay in-state tuition as long as they fulfill certain criteria. These can include maintaining a certain GPA while on the in-state tuition scholarship and/or doing volunteer activities. One such school that has an excellent in-state tuition scholarship for all its’ international students is Saint Cloud State University in Minnesota. The in-state tuition scholarship can make affording a. U.S. university very affordable for international students, especially for those that do not have outstanding results and achievements.

St. Cloud State University is a school under the Minnesota State Universities and Colleges system. This school is the ideal destination for all international students wanting to study in the United States and especially for those that are unable to afford the large price tag that accompanies an American education. International students receive the Academic and Cultural Sharing Scholarship (ACS) at this institution. This entitles students to pay in-state tuition fees which almost cut down tuition fees in half for international students. Currently international students can expect to pay around $3000 per semester for 15 credits which is pretty cheap compared to other state schools. Students are eligible for the ACS scholarship from their very first semester provided that they maintain a 2.5 GPA and perform 30 hours of voluntary cultural sharing activities every semester.

The ACS scholarship has made SCSU a prime destination for students from all over the world. Currently, more than 1000 international students are enrolled at SCSU and the number keeps increasing every year. All in all, SCSU is a very good fit for international students in the United States. The sheer number of international students that are enrolled there is a testimony to that fact.
